Guyana at 60: The Story Behind the Diamond Jubilee Hat

Model wearing the We Are Guyana Diamond Jubilee hat

At midnight on 26 May 1966, the Golden Arrowhead was raised for the first time and Guyana became an independent nation. In 2026, that moment turns 60. A sixtieth anniversary is a diamond jubilee, and this one is being marked everywhere Guyanese live, from Georgetown to Queens, Toronto and London.

We wanted to make something for it that people would actually wear. Not a souvenir that comes out once a year, but a piece you'd reach for on an ordinary Tuesday. That's where the Diamond Jubilee hat came from.

Why a dad hat

The classic dad hat is the most wearable cap there is: unstructured, low profile, soft cotton twill and an adjustable strap that fits almost anyone. It works with a T-shirt at the seawall, with a shirt at the airport and with everything in between. It also travels well, which matters when half the people who want one live overseas.

The design: quiet on the front, meaningful on the back

The front carries our emblem in embroidery, kept small and clean. The back carries the detail that makes this edition what it is: "60 Years", embroidered just above the strap. Anyone can see the hat. Only someone who knows will read the back.

That's the idea behind the whole brand. We Are Guyana isn't tourism merch. It's for Guyanese who want to represent where they're from with some style, wherever they are.

Six stitching colours, chosen for different people

  • Gold stitching is the best seller, and gold on black is the pairing most people choose.
  • Silver and navy blue are the understated options.
  • White gives the sharpest contrast on dark hats.
  • Flamingo is the loud one, and pink on pink is its most popular combination.
  • Purple is the newest colour and the least common on the street.

Each stitching colour comes on up to 11 hat colours, and every hat is embroidered to order.

From independence to republic

Independence is one of two dates every Guyanese knows. The other is 23 February, when Guyana became a republic in 1970, now celebrated as Mashramani. Between the two, the calendar gives plenty of reasons to wear where you're from.
